About Godavari District

Godavari District was a district in Madras Presidency in British India created in 1859, which was formerly within the Rajahmundry (Rajamahendravaram) District created in 1823.

In 1859, Rajahmundry district, along with Masulipatnam and Guntur districts, was reorganized into Godavari and Krishna districts.

In 1925, the Godavari district was divided into West Godavari and East Godavari districts with Eluru and Kakinada as their respective capitals. These districts have since remained under the same names till the present day.

Godavari is also called as the Dakshina Ganga (Ganges of the South).





East Godavari


East Godavari is a district in the Coastal Andhra region of Andhra Pradesh, India. Its district headquarters is at Rajahmundry.

West Godavari


The West Godavari district is a coastal district in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh with an administrative headquarters in Bhimavaram.West Godavari district or Paschima Godavari Jilla is one of the 26 districts in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. The district is situated in Coastal Andhra region of the state. It is bounded by Eluru district on the west, River Godavari on the east.


This place is well known for the temple 'Somarama' which is considered as one of the Five Pancharama temples.
